Peer-Mediated Programmes and Strategies for Educational and Community Participation
Meaning of Peer-Mediated Programmes
Research reviews peer-based instruction
Why Peer Mediation Can Help
Principles for Designing a Programme
Start with a participation goal
Select peers thoughtfully
Teach interaction explicitly
Organise a meaningful shared activity
Peer-Mediated Strategies in Educational Settings
Academic work
Cooperative learning and structured groups
Play and recreation
Classroom routines and transitions
Extending Participation to the Community
Community participation में public transport, library, parks, shops, sports, clubs और recreation शामिल हैं। इन settings में unfamiliar people, changing rules, sensory variation, waiting और functional communication की demands हो सकती हैं।
Plan meaningful opportunities
Setting की demands assess करें—travel, noise, waiting, payment, signs, communication, crowd, physical access और safety।
Prepare peers and community partners
Support autonomy and safety
Practical Implementation Sequence
- Access arrange करें: visual information, AAC, processing time और sensory adjustments उपलब्ध करें।
Monitoring Outcomes
Illustrative Example: A Library Visit
A learner wants to borrow a book about a preferred interest. The teacher and peer group plan the visit together: check the library opening time, identify the entrance, find the relevant section, ask how to locate the shelf, use the borrowing desk and return the book by the due date. A visual itinerary gives the main steps without scripting every sentence.
Before the visit, peers practise how to offer an invitation and wait for the learner’s response. The learner chooses whether to work beside a peer, communicate independently with library staff or request support. If the intended book is unavailable, the group explains the options and allows the learner to choose whether to reserve another copy, select an alternative or leave without borrowing.
Afterwards, the learner and team review which parts worked and whether the peer interaction felt useful. They consider whether any library signage, travel step or communication partner support needs improvement. The activity provides a real shared purpose rather than setting up a social encounter with no practical reason to interact.
Implementation Risks and Safeguards
Peer-mediated practice requires clear boundaries. A peer can offer an invitation, demonstrate a game or collaborate on a project, but should not be responsible for supervision, behaviour management, personal care or crisis response. Adult staff retain safeguarding responsibility and intervene when exclusion, bullying or safety concerns arise.
Voluntary participation matters for everyone. Some peers may prefer not to take a formal supporter role; the autistic learner may prefer to observe, take part briefly or choose another partner. These preferences can be respected while keeping future opportunities open. The aim is not to make any student perform friendship on demand.
Confidentiality should also be considered. Teachers need not disclose a classmate’s diagnostic information to recruit peer support. Instruction can focus on inclusive communication strategies for the whole group: pause for responses, share materials, explain game rules, ask before helping and respect “no”. This improves classroom culture without turning a learner into a public demonstration of disability.
Quick Revision
