Autism Assessment from a Gender Perspective

Explain gender-informed autism assessment

Question (10 marks): Discuss why autism assessment should consider gender-related expectations and masking without using stereotypes.

Answer — Gender-informed assessment देखती है कि social expectations, referral patterns और diagnostic assumptions किसी की autistic characteristics को पहचानने में बाधा तो नहीं बन रहे। Autism किसी एक gender तक सीमित नहीं है। कुछ girls और women की needs कम पहचानी जा सकती हैं, लेकिन यह हर व्यक्ति का समान अनुभव नहीं है और gender किसी diagnosis का shortcut नहीं है।

Under-recognition and referral patterns

Under-recognition and referral bias

Social expectations and presentation

Masking and camouflaging

Learner की own report, context और broader history पर विचार करें।

Developmental history

  • History beyond visible signs: Peer relationships, social activities के बाद fatigue, routines, transitions, sensory experiences और interest patterns के बारे में खुली, non-leading questions पूछें।
  • Incomplete records: Childhood information कम होने से assessment चुनौतीपूर्ण हो सकती है, लेकिन इसका अर्थ अपने-आप यह नहीं कि concern गलत है।
  • Multiple sources: Family/learner report, relevant records और observations को clinical assessment में साथ समझना उपयोगी है।

Gender diversity and respectful assessment

  • Identity: Autistic individuals की gender identity और expression विविध हो सकती है। Preferred name/pronouns पूछें और व्यक्ति की identity का सम्मान करें।
  • Privacy and consent: स्पष्ट करें कि information क्यों चाहिए और किससे साझा होगी। Gender diversity अपने-आप autism का प्रमाण नहीं।
  • Safe setting: Stigma या previous negative experiences disclosure और service access पर असर डाल सकते हैं; non-judgmental assessment environment उपयोगी है।

Worked Example

एक learner group conversation में peers के phrases दोहराती है, लेकिन अपनी राय बताने में कठिनाई और बाद में थकान महसूस करने की बात करती है। यह अकेले masking या autism diagnosis सिद्ध नहीं करता। Teacher written contribution, preparation time और clear discussion roles का परीक्षण कर सकता है, और persistent concerns पर appropriate referral information साझा कर सकता है।

Conclusion: Gender-informed assessment diagnostic criteria को नहीं बदलती; यह यह सुनिश्चित करने में मदद करती है कि stereotypes या narrow expectations के कारण evidence को गलत ढंग से interpret न किया जाए।

Compare common assessment errors with better practice

Question (4–5 marks): State common gender-related errors in autism assessment and how to avoid them.

Error Better practice
Good eye contact से autism rule out करना Wider developmental history और current criteria देखें
Social compliance को support need न होने का प्रमाण मानना Effort, context और learner feedback को साथ देखें
Interest का topic gender-typical होने से autism exclude करना Topic को अकेले diagnostic evidence न मानें
Calm appearance को wellbeing का प्रमाण मानना Learner की report और functioning changes सुनें
Masking दिखने पर diagnosis निश्चित मानना Masking descriptive concept है; qualified assessment आवश्यक है

Apply gender-informed assessment practice

Question (6–8 marks): Explain practical steps that help make autism assessment gender-informed and respectful.

Answer — Assessment में खुली questions, privacy और अलग contexts से information उपयोगी होती है। Gender assumptions के आधार पर निष्कर्ष न निकालें।

Practical steps

  1. Observe across contexts: Structured classwork के साथ unstructured activities और transitions में participation देखें।
  2. Ask accessibly: Learner की communication mode में उसकी preferences, fatigue और support needs पूछें।
  3. Reduce barriers: Clear instructions, structured group roles और alternative response formats पर विचार करें।
  4. Document facts: Observations को gender assumptions से अलग रखें।
  5. Refer appropriately: Persistent concerns को family/learner consent और local process के अनुसार qualified professionals तक पहुँचाएँ।

Quick Revision

  • Under-recognition: Gendered expectations और coping strategies कुछ presentations की पहचान देर से करा सकती हैं।
  • Masking/camouflaging: Person-specific; visible behaviour से अकेले निष्कर्ष न निकालें।
  • Developmental history: Early context और current functioning दोनों महत्वपूर्ण।
  • Gender diversity: Identity का सम्मान; gender diagnostic shortcut नहीं।
  • Educator’s role: Observe, document, provide access and refer.
