Screening Tools: M-CHAT-R/F and Cultural Adaptation

Explain the purpose and use of M-CHAT-R/F

Question (8 marks): Explain the purpose, parts and limitations of M-CHAT-R/F.

Answer — Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised with Follow-Up (M-CHAT-R/F)

Main components

Conclusion: M-CHAT-R/F को specified age group, official instructions और appropriate follow-up के साथ ही उपयोग करना चाहिए।

Explain the scoring pathway

Question (8 marks): Describe the M-CHAT-R/F scoring pathway and explain how the result should be used.

Scoring categories

  2. Moderate likelihood (3–7): Initial elevated-likelihood items के लिए M-CHAT-R Follow-Up questions administer करें।
  3. High likelihood (8–20): Official algorithm के अनुसार Follow-Up bypass करके diagnostic evaluation और early-intervention eligibility assessment के लिए referral की सलाह दी जाती है।
  4. Reverse-scored items: Official scoring में items 2, 5 और 12 के लिए “Yes/No” risk direction बाकी items से उलटा है।

Discuss cultural and linguistic adaptation

Question (10 marks): Discuss why cultural and linguistic adaptation matters when using autism screening tools.

Main considerations

  3. Back-translation and review: Bilingual experts

Compare parent-report and observation-based tools

Question (4–5 marks): Compare parent-report and observation-based screening tools.

  • Observation-based tools: किसी specified setting में behaviour का structured observation करते हैं।

Apply ethical screening practice

Question (6–8 marks): Explain appropriate referral and ethical use of a screening tool.

Ethical steps

  1. Explain the result accurately: Family
  5. Copyright and permissions: M-CHAT-R/F copyrighted instrument है।

Quick Revision

  • Type: Two-stage parent-report screening tool।
  • Screening result: Likelihood/referral indicator, diagnosis
  • Follow-Up: Moderate initial scores के selected items पर structured clarification।
  • Cultural adaptation: Accurate language, conceptual equivalence, appropriate validation और official scoring।
