Theoretical Perspectives: Polyvagal Theory, Monotropism and Sensory Perception
Explain three theoretical perspectives on autism
Question (10 marks): Explain Polyvagal Theory, Monotropism and Sensory Processing Theory in relation to autism.
Polyvagal Theory
Monotropism
Sensory perception and processing
Worked Example
Compare the three perspectives
Question (4–5 marks): Differentiate among Polyvagal Theory, Monotropism and Sensory Processing Theory.
| Perspective | Main focus | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Polyvagal Theory | Safety और autonomic state के बीच proposed relationship | कुछ mechanistic claims पर विवाद है; behaviour से physiological state diagnose न करें |
Apply the perspectives in classroom support
Question (6–8 marks): Explain how a special educator can use these perspectives carefully in practice.
Steps for practice
- Make one useful adjustment: Written preview, reduced noise, clearer transition cue
- Review the outcome: क्या safety, comfort, communication या participation बेहतर हुई?
Quick Revision
- Polyvagal Theory: Proposed model of safety and autonomic regulation; some core claims remain contested.
- Monotropism: Deep focus on selected interests or information channels का theoretical account।
