Characteristics as per the Latest Version of DSM and ICD
Explain the main diagnostic characteristics of ASD
Question (10 marks): Explain the main diagnostic characteristics of ASD according to DSM-5-TR.
Answer — DSM-5-TR यानी Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision
Domain A: Social communication and interaction
Domain B: Restricted and repetitive patterns
- Repetitive movement, object use or speech:
- Insistence on sameness: routines
Other diagnostic requirements
Worked Example
Compare DSM-5-TR and ICD-11
Question (4–5 marks): Compare DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 in autism classification.
Answer — ICD-11 यानी International Classification of Diseases, Eleventh Revision विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन की disease classification है।
| Basis | DSM-5-TR | ICD-11 |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Clinical diagnostic manual, chiefly used in mental-health assessment | International disease classification used across health systems |
| Core profile | Two domains: social communication/interaction and restricted/repetitive patterns | Autism spectrum disorder category with corresponding diagnostic requirements |
| Specifier detail | Support levels are described; other specifiers may be recorded | Specifiers distinguish the presence/absence of disorder of intellectual development and degree of functional language impairment |
| Educational use | Helps clinicians describe diagnostic features and support level | Helps clinicians classify and describe the developmental profile consistently |
Describe restricted and repetitive patterns
Question (6–8 marks): Describe restricted and repetitive patterns in ASD and explain their educational significance.
Answer — Restricted and repetitive patterns, DSM-5-TR
- Repetitive movements or speech: repeated movements, object use
- Routine and predictability: familiar sequence
Worked Example
Functional and educational implications
- Support communication: gestures, writing, visuals या Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) उपलब्ध रखें।
- Prepare for transitions: visual schedule, first-then cue
Quick Revision
