Historical Perspective and the Shift to Neurodiversity

Explain the historical development of autism classification

Question (6–8 marks): Explain major changes in the historical classification of autism.

Important milestones

Why the history matters

Worked Example

Discuss the neurodiversity paradigm in education

Question (10 marks): Discuss the neurodiversity paradigm and explain its implications for classroom practice.

Main principles

  1. Variation, not defect alone: Autistic
  2. Strengths and support needs:
  4. Agency and choice: Learner

Compare two approaches to autism

Question (4–5 marks): Compare a deficit-only approach with a neurodiversity-affirming approach.

Basis Deficit-only approach Neurodiversity-affirming approach

Practical principles for a special educator

  1. Assess the present learner:
  3. Review environmental barriers: noise, unclear instructions, sudden transitions और rigid response formats की भूमिका जाँचें।
  4. Respect identity language: जहाँ संभव हो, व्यक्ति की person-first या identity-first language preference का सम्मान करें।

Quick Revision

  • 1943 and 1944: Kanner और Asperger के early clinical descriptions autism history के महत्वपूर्ण पड़ाव हैं।
